Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Purpose of the Position:

  • Provides first, second and third level troubleshooting of equipment/process issues in a manufacturing facility.
  • Works hands-on with manufacturing equipment and activities.
  • Identifies and supports process improvements.
  • Uses judgment, experience, and initiative to resolve problems and make recommendations.

Hours of work:

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • First point of contact for troubleshooting production electrical/controls/mechanical issues.
  • Responsible for monitoring area performance, identifying equipment/process issues, and following issues to closure.
  • Manage and prioritize multiple troubleshooting issues utilizing sound technical principles.
  • Receive training from engineering in technical SME (Subject Matter Expert) areas, on new processes/equipment and/or on procedural changes
  • Work with a variety of groups including operators, other technicians, engineers, and trades to coordinate and direct equipment work
  • Support Preventive Maintenance efforts on equipment
  • Champion safety performance; Maintain and enforce all housekeeping and safety regulations
  • As needed, develop, document, and deliver training packages for new or modified equipment to production and support groups in the plant.

  • Maintain the systems and actions necessary to ensure compliance with department certification programs, quality System Audit Program, and ISO 14000 registration
  • Fill in for Shift Supervisor as needed.
  • Participate on a trained spill team for the Glass making areas; Participate in monthly spill drills

Education & Experience:

  • Two-year electrical/mechanical/or controls technical degree preferred (Associates)
  • Will consider experienced candidates (in lieu of AAS degree) with 4+ years demonstrated skills and relevant work experience
  • Experienced in troubleshooting and repair of electrical and pneumatic controls including use of test equipment
  • Experienced in troubleshooting and repair of simple to complex mechanical devices
  • Ability to read/understand electrical and mechanical drawings
  • Basic understanding of PLC
  • Computer literate and proficient in Microsoft Suite

  • Controlled response in emergency situations

Desired Skills:

  • Capable of using Diagnostic equipment
  • PC – Data Analysis (PI, etc.)
  • Electrical test equipment
  • Ability to read and understand basic PLC programming as well as to work through logic for troubleshooting

Soft Skills:

  • Works well in a team environment, is a “self-starter” and “results oriented”.
  • Acts and makes decisions in the best interest of the team.
  • Complies with all policies and procedures of the plant.
  • Works well with other disciplines (IT, mechanical, and process engineering) to fully understand manufacturing system functionality and design requirements.
