Corning is vital to progress – in the industries we help shape and in the world we share.

We invent life-changing technologies using materials science. Our scientific and manufacturing expertise, boundless curiosity, and commitment to purposeful invention place us at the center of the way the world interacts, works, learns, and lives.

Our sustained investment in research, development, and invention means we’re always ready to solve the toughest challenges alongside our customers.

The Specialty Materials segment manufactures products that provide more than 150 material formulations for glass, glass ceramics and fluoride crystals to meet demand for unique customer needs. Consequently, this segment operates in a wide variety of commercial and industrial markets that include display optics and components, semiconductor optics components, aerospace and defense, astronomy, ophthalmic products, telecommunications components and cover glass that is optimized for portable display devices.

The purpose of this position is to plan, setup, program, precision machine, lightweight and measure high value hardware components, primarily for optical applications (mirrors). Operations include grinding, milling, lightweighting, contouring, vent holing, and other precision machining to meet customer specifications.

工作职责包括但不t limited to:

  • Interpret customer and Corning internal drawings/blueprints of glass (mirror or other) parts and determine the approach to be used to meet specifications on 5-axis CNC machines, 5-axis AWJ machines, Large Campbell grinders, Northwoods vent hole machines or similar equipment used in the manufacturing of both solid and lightweight mirror components or other high precision parts requiring this type of equipment/process.
  • Determine proper method and sequence to assemble and align workpiece support systems to tolerances of +/- 0.005”.
  • Align workpieces within workspace to +/- 0.0005” tolerances.
  • Prepare workpieces for machining operation, including the application of surface masks and loading on support bodies when required for part protection.
  • Determine process details of how the parts will be loaded, held in place during machining, and unloaded from machine.
  • Insert and secure residual handling devices.
  • Manually remove residuals weighing in excess of 30 lbs. during AWJ lightweighting process.
  • 使物料搬运设备,如产生操作ad cranes, fork trucks, vacuum systems, and other material handling equipment to move heavy items up to 8 ton without damage.
  • Determine what the optimum tooling, grits, speeds, feeds, lead angles are for machining, lightweighting or contouring of parts to insure features and dimensions specified are met.
  • Able to hit tolerances as low as +/-0.001”.
  • Manage machine/process operations through the CNC controller and process control computer.
  • Initiate scripted machine actions via keyed inputs to CNC controller.
  • Initiate manual motion of machine via keypad inputs and pushbuttons on controller.
  • Interpret and react to system alarms.
  • Monitor, measure, and generate process performance metrics through the use of handheld measurement tools and system-generated data.
  • Maintain the high-pressure components of the system of the AWJ system.
  • Perform removal, teardown, inspection, rebuild, installation and precision alignment of the nozzle assembly.
  • Work in concert with trades personnel to replace high pressure hosing, piping, and rebuilding of intensifiers to ensure components meet specification and safety requirements.
  • Perform scheduled lubrication and inspections of the manipulator.
  • Calibrate and validate subsystem performance, including the abrasive valve and UHP (Ultra High-Pressure) pumps and nozzle performance.
  • Work in a team environment with engineering, technical, production and project management personnel.
  • Participate in the writing, revision and monitoring of Operating Procedures.

Graduate from SUNY Canton or similar education in Mechanical/Manufacturing Engineering Technology 2 year program in Glass Machinist classification or external machinist and CNC experience that is equivalent to this level of training.
