Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

  • Conduct quality inspection, failure analysis and material characterization analyses to support Engineering, Development, Production, and Customer Returns
  • Support root cause understanding and facilitate troubleshooting efforts
  • Employ analytical methods including optical microscopy, stereomicroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, confocal laser scanning microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy
  • Hand-on sample preparation for optical microscopy, stereomicroscopy, and SEM samples
  • Document all results in structured reports for internal and external customers
  • Participate in the design and development of reporting systems
  • Manage personal workload to ensure optimal analysis turnaround
  • Prioritize samples workload to meet customer requirements and maintain a smooth sample throughput
  • Participate in instrument calibration, instrument troubleshooting, documentation, and laboratory related audits
  • Perform 1st level trouble shooting of laboratory equipment and coordinate with vendors to perform 2nd level troubleshooting as needed
  • Maintain a current understanding of knowledge and techniques in optical microscopy, stereomicroscopy, confocal laser scanning microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy
  • Maintain lab environment and records in compliance with Environmental Health & Safety requirements and participate in safety programs

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:

  • 4-year Bachelors degree (BS) in Material Science, Geology, Chemistry, Metallurgical or Ceramic Engineering, or related discipline required

REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • Microscopy experience (examples: PPL, XPL, Compound Microscopes, Stereo Microscopes, SEM, EDS, CLSM)
  • Experience with microscopy sample preparation
  • Passion for developing analytical techniques and following previously established techniques to determine root cause of failures, material characterization, and/or troubleshooting endeavors
  • Strong oral and written communication skills to enable collaboration and consultation with engineers and fellow scientists
  • Adhere to Quality Systems

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Typical working hours 8-10 hours/day; 40-50 hours/week
  • Some production support will require additional hours
