Position Description:

  • Full time position (40 hours per week, normal business schedule)
  • R&D work in optical communications devices involving the transmission and manipulation of optical power and optical signals
  • Initial assignment in optical signal management in co-packaged optics for next-generation data center switches
  • Design and/or characterization of components of optical signal management systems including some or all of optical fibers, optical connectors, chip/fiber coupling, waveguide circuits
  • Experimental design and implementation, data analysis and communication of results in presentations and permanent reports
  • Preparation of invention disclosures when appropriate
  • Some travel possible, to other Corning R&D locations & manufacturing plants

REQUIREMENTS:

Education:

  • PhD in Optics/Optoelectronics, Physics or Engineering

Experience required:

  • At least 5 years of applicable experience
  • At least 2 years of experience in Industrial R&D
  • Data analysis
  • Lab work in optics
  • Design and/or fabrication and/or characterization of optical waveguides or systems

Track Record Required:

  • Demonstrated capability to generate valuable new concepts, create new theory and/or adapt existing theory, perform simulations, design & build parts and prove out concepts through key measurements

Publications Required:

  • First author on journal paper(s) and/or conference proceedings in physics, optics and/or engineering

Soft Skills Required:

  • Strong technical communication skills
  • Inventiveness, creativity Independent problem-solving, resourcefulness
  • Ability to drive to fundamental understanding
  • Effectiveness in team environment

"Nice to Have" Skills and Experience:

  • Experience in High-Speed Optical Telecommunications environment
  • Experience with Patents and/or Patent Applications
